Behling, Gems continue to heat up offensively

QUINCY -- Drew Behling altered his approach. It allowed him to alter the scoreboard.

Struggling in his first two at-bats in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader against the Cape Catfish, the Quincy Gems left fielder uncorked a three-run home run for the big blow in a five-run fourth inning. It propelled the Gems to a 10-5 victory at QU Stadium and the sweep of the Prospect League doubleheader.

"They had been burning me with changeups all night," Behling said. "I think I struck out four times today on straight changeups, so I decided to sit on the changeups.

"The second pitch was a changeup, and I put a good swing on the ball."

That's been the case almost every game lately.

Behling went 1 for 3 in the 6-2 victory in the opening game and followed it with a 1-for-4 showing in the second game, running his hitting streak to 10 straight games. He is 15 of 37 over that stretch -- a .405 clip.

"Honestly, early on, I was struggling," Behling said. "I asked (Gems manager Pat Robles), ‘What's the key to hitting in this league?' He said hit off the fastball, so that's what I've been doing.

"Now those curveballs start to look a little easier to hit."

It's that way across the board. The Gems had eight hits in the opener and 14 in the nightcap, outhitting the Catfish 22-7 in the two games combined. Part of that is a more relaxed approach at the plate.

The other part is good pitching to keep an opponent's lineup at bay.

In the first game, left-hander Ty Peccioli tossed a seven-inning complete game, allowing two earned runs and four hits. He struck out four and walked two. In the second game, right-hander Nick McRandal allowed one run and two hits over four innings, while striking out eight and walking none.

"Our pitching was phenomenal tonight," Robles said. "It was a good deal to have those guys come in. It's been rough."

The Gems (7-9) have won three straight games and will play at home twice this upcoming week, facing Normal on Wednesday and Springfield on Thursday.
