Gems ground Aviators for fourth straight victory

LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Quincy Gems continue to pour on the runs.

It's keeping them in the top half of the Prospect League West Division standings.

The Gems banged out 20 hits on the way to thrashing the Lafayette Aviators 16-5 Tuesday night at Loeb Stadium. It's the third time in Quincy's four-game winning streak it has scored more than 10 runs, and the Gems are averaging 12.5 runs per game in that stretch.

It didn't take long for the Gems (8-9) to strike against the Aviators.

Kal Youngquist ripped a two-run home run in a three-run first inning. In the third, Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli and Drew Behling hit back-to-back homers to make it 6-0.

The Aviators (12-5), who had a five-game winning streak snapped, cut the deficit to 6-5 heading to the fifth inning. However, the Gems scored 10 unanswered runs.

Quincy scored three runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings. Kyle Crowl belted a three-run homer in the seventh to make it 13-5.

Youngquist added RBI singles in the eighth and ninth innings.

Ten of the Gems' 20 hits went for extra bases. Ryan Ignoffo and Sam Klein each had two doubles.

Clark-Chiapparelli went 5 for 6 with three RBIs and scored four runs, while Youngquist went 4 for 6 with five RBIs.

Tyler Jasmin picked up the victory for the Gems after throwing five scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and walking one.
