QUINCY -- The Hannibal Hoots had the pitching efforts to sweep two games from the Terre Haute Rex.

The offense, however, didn't follow suit.

Hannibal mustered just eight hits in splitting a Prospect League doubleheader after beating Terre Haute 3-1 in the opener, but dropping the nightcap 3-0 Monday night at QU Stadium.

"As a pitching staff, I don't think we can be upset with three runs (in Game 2)," Hannibal right-handed pitcher Hunter Becker said. "Three runs are going to keep you close. Sometimes the hits will fall, and sometimes they won't."

The Hoots (6-10) had timely ones in the opener.

Diego Munoz ripped an RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the second inning to score Brant Vanaman for a 1-0 lead. Jordan Bailey followed with a sacrifice fly to center for a 2-0 advantage.

That was enough run support for Becker, who allowed just two hits and struck out four across 52/3 scoreless innings.

"I just started getting ahead and that opened up pitches," Becker said. "You can throw a lot more when you're ahead. Getting ahead was the most important thing."

Vanaman added an insurance run when he lifted the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth inning over the right field wall to make it 3-0.

"Hitting that was really a boost of energy," said Vanaman, who had two hits and scored two runs. "The team really showed that in the dugout."

It didn't carry over with the bats in the nightcap.

Hannibal was held to just three hits as Terre Haute's Max Klein and Colton?Panaranto combined to strikeout 12 across seven scoreless innings.

"You're not going to win too many games when you're striking out 12 times," Hoots manager Clayton Hicks said. "It was a rough day offensively, but it was a great day to pitch."

Terre Haute (9-7) plated a run in the top of the first on Ross Indlecoffer's RBI single. Justin Jenkins made it 2-0 with a solo homer to lead off the third.

Hannibal stranded two runners in the fifth as the last eight batters were retired. The Hoots stranded six runners total.

Hicks, however, is optimistic as Hannibal trails division leader Cape Catfish by 31/2 games heading into an eight-game road trip.

"We're making strides in the right direction," Hicks said. "It was a rough night offensively, but we'll adjust."
