Gems give another to DuPage

QUINCY -- All the momentum was sitting on the Gems' shoulders after the eighth inning.

Quincy battled back from a 6-3 deficit and tied DuPage at 6-all in their Prospect League battle on Sunday at QU Stadium thanks to a three-run home run by Tim Borden II. But the Pistol Shrimp answered with a run in the top of the ninth and the Gems couldn't respond as DuPage walked away with a 7-6 victory.

The Pistol Shrimp (19-14) secured a two-game sweep in the weekend series against the Gems (18-17), which gives DuPage a full two-game lead for second place in the Western Division standings.

Everything started great for Quincy. Starting pitcher Ryan Ignoffo made quick work of the top of the order, thanks in part to a double play by his infielders, and designated hitter Joey Polak belted a two-run homer over the fence in the bottom of the frame to give the Gems a 2-0 advantage.

DuPage struck back in the third with five runs, highlighted by leadoff home run by Hogan McIntosh and two-run single by Kyle Kolb.

Both teams traded runs in the fifth inning, with Quincy's coming on a solo dinger by Kyle Crowl, and it remained a 6-3 Pistol Shrimp lead heading to the bottom of the eighth.

It took just three Quincy batters to knot the game up at 6-all, as Crowl led off with a walk, then Drew Behling drew another free base to set up the three-run jack by Borden II.

Before the Gems could celebrate, however, DuPage retook the lead in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Carl Valk, and in the bottom of the frame Quincy got the tying and winning run on the bases but couldn't bring them around.

Crowl went 2 for 3 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored for the Gems while Polak was 2 for 4 with his home run.

Brady Netherton pitched five innings in relief of Ignoffo and allowed two hits and a run while striking out three, while Tyler Jasmin took the loss after allowing the winning run in his lone inning of work.
