HANNIBAL, Mo. -- Momma's Homestyle Cooking opened last week in Hannibal offering a full menu of made-from-scratch dishes.
It took four months of work to open the doors to Momma's Homestyle Cooking at 3308 Market St., and the work has paid off so far since the restaurant's doors opened on July 16.
Owner Robert Brownell has been in the restaurant business his whole life, dating back to early years at his mother's establishment. He joined waitress Melonie Porter and cook/manager Cindy Snyder with the goal of opening a restaurant featuring home-cooked food and all-day breakfast in the Oakwood neighborhood.
"This is all homemade stuff, made-from-scratch homemade pies and everything like your momma cooked -- that's why we called it Momma's Homestyle Cooking," he said.
Porter said business has been brisk so far. Snyder sold 20 of the hand-tenderized and breaded tenderloins on Monday and all of her homemade cakes and pies were sold -- her specialties also include homemade cole slaw, fresh burgers and pot roast. The restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. A couple visiting from Ames, Iowa, dined there each of the first three days since the restaurant opened, and they expressed their plans to return.
Brownell said he will be offering delivery service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and he joins his fellow crew members in their plans to be part of an enduring destination in Hannibal.
"We're hoping to be here to stay," he said.
Porter motioned toward Snyder and nodded.
"The way she cooks, they'll be," she said. "If anyone goes away from here hungry, it's their own fault, because the portions that she dishes up are healthy, and she's an excellent cook."
