Ninth-graders need dental exam

QUINCY -- Required physical and dental exam forms are available as part of the online registration process for Quincy Public Schools students.

"The only state requirement that has been changed is ninth-graders will need dental this year. This is the first year for that," QPS Nursing Director Brandy Kirby said.

Dental forms for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, sixth-grade and ninth-grade students need to be completed and turned in before May 15.

But physicals for students going into pre-K, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades and immunizations for students going into pre-K, kindergarten, sixth and 12th grade, and for students moving into Illinois from states with different requirements, must be done by Oct. 15.

Students moving into QPS from other states which might not have the requirements Illinois has also must meet the Oct. 15 deadline.

"The state actually requires us to exclude students that haven't met the requirement for immunizations and physicals by Oct. 15," Kirby said.

School nurses can help students and families find community resources to meet the requirements, and forms authorizing the Wellness Express to provide service to students are available through the registration process online at qps.org.

"It's very important for them to be in contact with their doctor so the doctor can make sure everything is the way it should be. A lot of time during physicals doctors may pick up on something no one in the family picked up on before," Kirby said. "With immunizations, we don't want an outbreak of measles or mumps. We want to keep kids safe in our schools."
