PALMYRA, Mo. -- When students in the Palmyra R-1 School District returned to classes Thursday, they might have noticed a variety of construction projects have been completed or were still taking place.
Superintendent Kirt Malone gave an update on the various projects at the Palmyra School Board's monthly meeting this week.
Malone reported, for example, that the renovated middle school kitchen was completed and was ready for the start of school. In addition, he said the exterior of the Vo-Ag building is nearly finished, and masonry work has started on the interior. Most of the building's ductwork is installed, and the small engines classroom is enclosed.
Meanwhile, the foundation of the new wrestling room is finished, and the structure is going up this week.
Malone said the all-weather surface on the new high school track is being installed this week, the bleacher installation and finish dirt work are slated to start later this week.
New fencing has already been installed.
The School Board discussed some proposed designs for a concession stand at the track complex.
In other action, the board heard an update on plans to establish an educational foundation to serve as a new conduit of funding for local schools. A committee has been working on the proposal with the goal of having a school foundation up and running within the next year so it can begin accepting charitable contributions from prospective donors.
