HANNIBAL – The James O'Donnell Funeral Home of Hannibal is acquiring the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy, Ill.

The purchase will be complete at the end of September, with the Quincy location rebranded as the O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home to honor both the new and most recent owners, the Cookson family. The James O'Donnell family-owned funeral homes are expanding to four locations with this acquisition extending the reach of Life Celebration Experiences into another community.

"We are honored to be able to assist families in the Quincy region. I am very proud to be a fifth-generation funeral director serving my hometown and surrounding communities," said President and owner Jimmy O'Donnell.

"Helping families at a tough time has always been very important to our family, getting a chance to share our healing message with another community is an exciting opportunity for my family in more ways than one. I'm very pleased to announce my brother, Rory O'Donnell, will be the general manager of O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home."

Rory and his family also will reside in Quincy. Rod Cookson and the current staff will stay on to continue their work with the O'Donnell family. Kyle Cookson is retiring to Manhattan, Kan. to be closer to family.

The O'Donnells have been serving Northeast Missouri families for more than 100 years. Jimmy O'Donnell said the Life Celebration Home is a concept that is transforming the industry and providing families with more options. The Life Celebration Home experience creates an immersive, healing environment full of personalized memorials that include photographs, memorabilia, special honors, photo collages, mementos, music, and other unique tributes – anything that celebrates and tells the story of the life of a loved one.

In 1895, the James O'Donnell Funeral Home began operations in Hannibal. In 2001, Jim O'Donnell became the fifth generation to join the Funeral Home. The James O'Donnell Funeral Home also owns and operates Lewis Brothers Funeral Home in Palmyra, and the James O'Donnell Life Celebration Home in Monroe City.
