STERLING, Ill. -- The longest road trip of the new Western Big Six Conference slate didn't bother the Quincy High School boys soccer team in the least.

In fact, it seemed to bring out the best in the Blue Devils' defense yet again.

Quincy limited Sterling to five shots and walked away from Rosco Eades Stadium with a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils have allowed four goals in their first five games and posted their second shutout.

"It tells them they are making progress and taking steps in the right direction," QHS coach Ron Bridal said. "Everyone enjoys when you keep a clean sheet."

The Blue Devils (2-3, 2-0 WB6) grabbed the lead in the 14th minute when midfielder Brady Peter pushed a ball forward and Andrew VanderMaiden beat his defender 1-on-1 and scored. Carter Venvertloh scored off a Jack Bartley assist in the 31st minute, and Bartley scored off a VanderMaiden assist in the 75th minute to finish it off.

"We're producing quality runs and well-timed runs," Bridal said. "It's something we're getting better at and will continue to work on."

The Blue Devils outshot the Golden Warriors 13-5 and put seven shots on goal.

"We had to grind and grind, but we're getting better," Bridal said. "I like the progress we're making."
