QUINCY -- Officials with North Adams Home, one of the largest employers in Mendon, has announced that the nursing home is closing its doors after more than four decades in operation.
The announcement came Monday afternoon. Calls to the nursing home from The Herald-Whig went unanswered.
"Unfortunately, like many other nursing homes in the state, we find it increasingly difficult to remain viable," the board of directors wrote. "Therefore, with the best interests of our residents in mind, the Board of Directors has elected to close the facility no earlier than 60 days from the date of this notice."
An official closing date was not included in the announcement.
In July, members of the First Congregational Church in Mendon donated the proceeds from the church's annual food stand at the Adams County Fair to the nursing home after hearing reports that the nursing home was struggling financially due to the decline and delay in the state's Medicaid reimbursement programs. Since March 2014, 20 state-licensed skilled-care nursing homes have closed in the state. Administrators for those closed homes cite the diminishing investment made by the state and the state's delay in reimbursing Medicaid expenditures.
A study commissioned by the Health Care Council concluded that Illinois ranks 49th in the nation for Medicaid reimbursement rates, and nursing homes lose about $15,000 per year -- or an average of $41 per day -- for each Medicaid-funded patient. Those shortages create a $649 million shortfall yearly for the industry in Illinois.
The statement from the nursing home did not indicate how many residents currently reside there or how many are eligible for Medicaid.
The skilled care nursing facility, which cost $1.2 million to construct, opened its doors in October 1977.
The statement from the board of directors did not list the number of employees currently employed at North Adams Home.
The Board of Directors did wish to assure the public that the staff would continue to work "diligently with the residents and their families to find suitable housing."
