HANNIBAL -- Suffering a rare conference loss still stuck with the Hannibal volleyball team five days later.

Hannibal had its lengthy winning streak in North Central Missouri Conference play with a three-set loss to Kirksville last week.

"It was the first time we lost in conference since I've been here," Hannibal senior Kaylee Falconer said. "It was really hard to come back after that. We kind of still had our heads down."

The Pirates feel like they're back on track now after easily dispatching Fulton 25-17, 25-9 Tuesday night at Korf Gym.

"I think this will get us back playing like we should," Falconer said. "I feel like we're going to get back to how we're used to playing."

The Pirates showed it.

Fulton hung around as Hannibal led 9-7 in the opening set before the Pirates scored nine of the next 11 points to push their lead to 18-9. Hannibal's Peyton Utterback had three kills in that stretch, and Falconer had two.

Fulton never got closer than six points the rest of the set.

Hannibal was even more dominant in the second set. The Pirates opened with an 11-1 run as the Hornets struggled with attacking. Falconer had an ace, and Utterback also had another kill.

Hannibal used another 5-0 run as Falconer and Utterback had kills that pushed the lead to 21-8. Kendal Locke had a kill and an ace that put the match away.

Bella Falconer led with six kills, while Utterback had three. Kaylee Falconer dished out 13 assists.

"Our blocking was definitely better tonight," Hannibal coach Megan Phillips said. "I think that had a lot to do with it. We also only missed two serves tonight."

The Pirates have been shorthanded as senior outside hitter Emma Deien has been out the last week with an injury. She's expected to return later this week.

Her return will be welcomed.

"She's kind of an all-around missing piece," Phillips said.
