QUINCY -- Christmas candlelight tours will be offered on two consecutive weekends this month the Gov. John Wood Mansion, 12th and State in Quincy.

The tours are free and open to the public. They will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14, and next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20 and 21.

The annual tours are hosted by the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County, which maintains the former home of Quincy's founder -- a friend of Abraham Lincoln who went on to become the 12th governor of Illinois.

The Greek Revival home will be decorated for the holidays, and visitors will get a chance to see many of the period furnishings and Wood family heirlooms on display.

Docents will be stationed throughout the building to answer questions about the former governor, the mansion and the home's furnishings.

Tours will begin every 20 minutes at the mansion's visitor center. Reservations are not required but are recommended by calling the HSQAC office at 217-222-1835.

Music will be performed during the tours on the following schedule:

º Friday, Dec. 13: Singer-songwriter-guitarist Kayla Obert will perform contemporary and classic holiday music.

º Saturday, Dec. 14: Violin students from Javaux Music School -- ranging in age from 10 to 17 -- will play classical, fiddling, folk and pop music along with Christmas tunes.

º Friday, Dec. 20: Zeke and Carol Howerter will perform. Carol will play the 1875 Magnussen & Company parlor organ and the 1844 melodeon in the mansion's dining room and will accompany Zeke, who will sing traditional holiday music.

º Saturday, Dec. 21: Jerry Wagner, Jillian Wagner Miller and Friends will present a varied program of traditional Christmas music.

The theme for this year's candlelight tours is "Historic Houses of Lincoln's Illinois," which is based on the 2018 book by Erika Holst, curator of decorative arts and history at the Illinois State Museum. The book features 22 noteworthy Illinois houses, including the John Wood Mansion and the Dr. Richard Eells House in Quincy, both of which are pictured on the cover.

Copies of the book are available in the visitor center's gift shop, which will be open during the candlelight tours.

The event is sponsored by the Oakley-Lindsay Foundation.
