Prep boys basketball roundup: Even scoring powers Eagles through Tornadoes

WINCHESTER, Ill. -- The Liberty boys basketball team opened up its first game in the 98th annual Winchester Invitational Tournament with a 62-22 victory over Griggsville-Perry on Monday.

The Eagles spread their scoring out, with five players scoring at least eight points. Nolton Klingele finished with a game-high 13 points, while Jordan Nelsen had 10, Breiton Klingele and Ryan Hedrick both had nine and Logan Robins chipped in eight points.

Liberty had 10 players score in the victory, while the Tornadoes' leading scorers were Tanner Leedy and Tucker Kunzeman with six points each.

Sixth-seeded Liberty will face No. 3 seed PORTA in the quarterfinals at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.


Wildcats wallop Wolves

The Western boys basketball team's defense allowed no more than five points in a quarter in a 57-13 victory over Pleasant Hill during the first round of the 98th annual Winchester Invitational Tournament on Monday.

The Wolves only managed two total field goals in the first half as the Wildcats built a 38-4 halftime lead. Carson Dell matched the entire Pleasant Hill team with a game-high 13 points for Western, while Preston Wellman had 11 points and Kyle Colgrove finished with nine.

Western moves on to face second-seeded Payson Seymour in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.


Panthers offense can't keep up

After the first quarter the 13th-seeded Central boys basketball team only trailed fifth-seeded Jacksonville Routt 16-14 in the first round of the Winchester Invitational Tournament on Monday.

The Panthers offense couldn't keep pace, however, as the Rockets outscored them 13-6 in the second half on the way to a 57-41 victory. Central gained a little ground in the second half by outscoring Routt 14-12 in the third quarter to trail 41-34, but the Rockets closed the fourth quarter out by scoring 16 points and holding the Panthers to seven.

Blake Eyler was Central's leading scorer with 11 points, with all of his scoring coming in the first and third quarters. Josh Alford ad Peyton Clampitt both finished with eight points. Ethan Walker led the Rockets with 14 points.


Keokuk hands Unity tourney loss

The Keokuk boys basketball team pulled away during the second quarter of a 63-30 victory over Unity in the Hancock County Tournament Monday night at Southeastern.

The Chiefs outscored the Mustangs 20-6 during the second quarter to take a 33-16 halftime lead.

Austin Cornwell led Unity (1-15) with 14 points. Anthony Potratz led Keokuk with 25 points.


Suns cruise past Chargers

The Southeastern boys basketball team got off to a strong start in the Hancock County Tournament with a 52-25 victory over Illini West on Monday at Southeastern.

The Suns allowed just two points in the first quarter on the way to a 17-2 lead, and they extended that to a 28-9 advantage by halftime. Danny Stephens finished with a game-high 22 points for Southeastern, while Nick Mauzo had eight for Illini West.


Eagles get by Cardinals

The Knox County boys basketball team defeated South Shelby 60-52 on the road on Monday night.

Conner Hayes led the Eagles with 22 points, while Trent Klocke had 15 and Coltin Morrow chipped in 10 points.
