QUINCY — Officials at Rise Quincy, a cannabis dispensary at 2703 Broadway, learned Wednesday that the state's Department of Financial and Professional Regulation approved a license to sell adult-use recreational cannabis.
With the approval of Rise Quincy's license and another dispensary in Sauget, the state has now issued 48 cannabis dispensary licenses.
Attempts to reach employees at Rise Quincy or its parent company, Green Thumb Industries, were not successful. The company has yet to announce when the dispensary will open.
Green Thumb Industries had initially hoped to open the dispensary on Jan. 1, which was the date a new state law legalizing the purchase, possession and recreational use of cannabis took effect in Illinois.
Under the new law, Illinois residents 21 years and older may legally possess 30 grams of cannabis flower, 500 milligrams of THC in a cannabis-infused product and 5 grams of cannabis concentrate. Non-residents over age 21 may legally possess half the amount Illinois residents may possess.
Per the new law, the purchase of cannabis and cannabis-related products can only be done at a state-licensed dispensary.
When it opens, Rise Quincy will become the city's second adult-use recreational cannabis dispensary.
Herbal Remedies, at 4440 Broadway, opened Jan. 1 to crowds of several hundred people. Herbal Remedies officials have said they also plan to open another recreational use dispensary at 1837 Broadway, the site of the former Daylight Donuts, which closed in 2018.
Herbal Remedies Chief Operating Officer Christine "Chris" Wildrick said the company's hopes to open its second recreational use dispensary by the end of the year.
