Panthers push two champions, four wrestlers total into sectional

PETERSBURG, Ill. -- The Central wrestling program had two grapplers crowned regional champions and finished third as a team Saturday in the Class 1A Petersburg PORTA Regional.

The Panthers advanced four wrestlers to next weekend's sectional at Stanford Olympia.

Tremont won the team championship with 233.5 points, while PORTA was second at 224 and Central third at 110. Quincy Notre Dame was seventh with 67 points.

At 132 pounds, the Panthers' Conner Hughes scored a 17-1 technical fall in the second period against Beardstown's Treyseaon Grant in the semifinals and earned a 12-10 victory over PORTA's Jonah Sinclair in the championship.

At 160, Central's Clayton Boehler stuck Midwest Central's Griffin Watts in 57 seconds in the semifinals and followed it with an 8-4 decision over PORTA's Blayke Reed in the championship.

At 126, top-seeded Zach Foote of Central scored a pair of pins -- he stuck Macomb's Carter Hoge in 2:51 and Tremont's Logan Poisal in 1:49 -- before losing a 5-1 decision to PORTA's Blake Cagle in the finals.

At 113, the Panthers' Hunter Louderback finished third, beating Deer Creek-Mackinaw's Logan Johnson with a pin in 57 second and earning a 7-2 decision over QND's Catherine Steinkamp in the third-place match.

The Raiders had one wrestler reach the championship round and three wrestlers total advance.

At 106, QND's Curtis Steinkamp pinned Illini West's Sage Wilde in 1:43 and PORTA's Justin Miller in 4:39 to reach the championship match. He was pinned by Deer Creek-Mackinaw's Payton Murphy in 3:08 in the finals.

At 120, the Raiders' Hunter Bolton rebounded from getting pinned in the semifinals in 1:01 by Tremont's Dawson Hillman to pin Central's Gavin Graves in 1:49 and Deer Creek-Mackinaw's Kadin Hoshor in 50 seconds to take third.

At 160, QND senior Sam Schlegl suffered a 6-3 loss to PORTA's Reed in the semifinals, but he pinned Tremont's Logan Stedman in 3:39 and earned a 12-4 major decision over Midwest Central's Watts in the third-place match.

Illini West and West Hancock had one wrestler apiece advance.

Illini West's Lance Belshaw reached the championship match at 145 by pinning PORTA's Kyus Mitchell in 5:07 in the semifinals. He lost to Tremont's Levi Leitner in the finals, getting pinned in 3:41.

West Hancock's Jeremiah Cole fought through the consolation bracket after getting pinned by Central's Luke Hedden in 1:51 in his opening match at 182 pounds. He beat Hedden 11-7 in the third-place match.
