MOUNT STERLING, Ill. -- The Mount Sterling man charged in the 2019 shooting death of a Mount Sterling woman has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges.

Court records show that John M. Dean on Thursday pleaded not guilty in Brown County Circuit Court. A jury trial was scheduled May 18.

Dean, 40, is accused of killing 44-year-old Rebecca L. Niewohner on June 14 in the 400 block of East Chestnut. It is alleged that he shot her with a .45-caliber handgun.

The Mount Sterling Police Department and the Brown County Sheriff's Department responded to the report of a shooting at 9:20 p.m. and found Niewohner had died at the scene, with Dean suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.

Dean was taken to Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville before being transferred to a Springfield hospital, where he had been in intensive care for injuries from the gunshot wound.

Dean is set to return to court April 23 for a pre-trial hearing.

He remains free after posting $2,500 bond, though a condition of his bond is that he remains confined to the interior of his home and is subject to GPS monitoring.
