Niota man sentenced to 45 years in prison on sex abuse charge

CARTHAGE, Ill. -- A Niota man on Tuesday was sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Robert L. Dowell, 43, must serve 85% of the sentence before he is eligible for parole.

The Hancock County Sheriff's Department said Dowell was arrested in September 2019 after an investigation conducted by the department, along with the Lee County (Iowa) and Des Moines County (Iowa) sheriff's departments. He faced sex abuse charges in both states.

Dowell is serving a sentence in the Iowa Department of Corrections in connection with the same investigation.
