To The Herald-Whig:
Once upon a time, there was such a thing as conservative Democrats. They comprised a significant part of the electorate during my parent's generation. They were known for their ability to cooperate and compromise for the betterment of our country. Unfortunately, they were brought to the verge of extinction by their more aggressive liberal Democratic cousins who were rapidly drifting toward socialism.
During the Obama years, socialism in the Democratic Party grew by leaps and bounds with totalitarian overreach into crucial areas of our society. The passage of the "Affordable" Care Act and its thousands of pages of regulations allowed these socialist Democrats to take control of health care and 17% of our economy in one fell swoop. Democratic Party control of the teachers' unions allowed leftist propaganda into our schools.
Other examples of totalitarian overreach include Dodd-Frank legislation's controls on banks and the weaponization of the IRS and Environmental Protection Agency against Republicans and conservatives. And let's not forget the spying on Donald Trump and his administration by Obama's Department of Justice in cahoots with the FBI and various intelligence agencies, both before and after Trump's election.
If you don't believe Democrats are trying to make our country more like Russia or China, think again. Socialist Bernie Sanders came in second in the Democratic presidential primary. That success enabled socialists to push the Democratic Party much further to the left than it had ever been. The proof of that lies in the fact that Democratic governors and mayors have allowed legitimate and needed protests of the George Floyd killing to turn into murderous riots in several states and cities they control. These Democratic politicians allowed police stations and entire sections of their cities like Seattle and Minneapolis to be burned or overrun by vandals and Marxist anarchists.
An ABC News and Ipsos poll was just released that asked the question, "Do you support or oppose the movement to ‘defund the police?' " Fifty-five percent of Democrats said they supported it! Before these Marxists can completely take over our country, they must destroy the pillars of our society. I believe we are now watching that happen before our very eyes.
