Quincy Community Theatre is holding auditions by appointment only for "The Giver" Sept. 6-7 in the Rehearsal Hall. "The Giver" will run Oct. 27-30 and technical rehearsals are Oct. 22-23. Nine roles are available for students and adults: Jonas, who is about to turn 12; his mother and father; Lily, his 7-year-old sister; Asher and Fiona, friends of Jonas who are also about to turn 12; the Chief Elder, who is the master of the Ceremony of the Twelve; The Giver, who is an old man and receiver of memories; and Rosemary, a young girl. "The Giver" is based on Lois Lowry's award-winning novel. Jonas' world is perfect. Everything is under control and safe. There is no war or fear or pain. There are also no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. But when Jonas turns 12, he is chosen for special training from The Giver -- to receive and keep the memories of the community. The Giver is the only person who holds the memories of real pain and real joy. Now Jonas will learn the truth about life -- and the hypocrisy of his utopian world. There is no going back. Through this astonishing and moving adaptation, discover what it means to grow up, to grow wise, and to take control of your own destiny. Appointments will last approximately 45 minutes and auditionees must be prepared to read from the script. Scripts are available for a two-day check-out prior to auditions at the QCT Box Office in the Oakley Lindsay Center. For more information about the show, visit www.1qct.org.
