SHELBINA, Mo. -- A Shelbina man was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when his vehicle failed to yield to an oncoming train.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a 2000 Volvo driven by Donald G. Leftwich, 46, of Shelbina, was heading north on a private drive 1 mile west of Shelbina at 12:05 p.m. when it was struck on the driver's side by an eastbound Burlington Northern train driven by Mike N. Lane, 52, of Brookfield, after failing to yield to a stop sign at the railroad crossing. The vehicle then traveled off the east side of the roadway, the patrol said.
Leftwich was taken by Salt River Ambulance to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill., with serious injuries.
The patrol was assisted by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department and Shelby County Fire and Rescue.
