Raiders defeat Newton to advance to state title match

NORMAL, Ill. -- Sydney Hummert's kill ended a remarkable second set and the match as the Quincy Notre Dame volleyball team defeated Newton 25-19, 28-26 in the semifinals of the Class 2A state volleyball tournament in Redbird Arena.

The Raiders (33-8) advance to Saturday's championship game at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of Friday's other semifinal between Elgin Harvest Christian and Champaign St. Thomas More. QND will be gunning for its fifth championship in school history.

QND trailed 15-6 in the second set after a kill by Newton's Taylor Smith. The Raiders came back with five straight points, and after a kill by Allyson Kuhl and an ace by Smith, the Raiders retaliated with three more points -- a kill by Taylor Keck, a passing error by the Eagles and a service ace by Hannah Peters.

QND finally tied the score at 18, but Newton regained the lead at 21-20. On the next play, the Eagles got the ball to Abby Frohning, who finished with a match-high 15 kills. Frohning went up for the kill, but she was blocked for a point by sophomore Meredith Siebers.

The match was tied at 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26, but QND finally put together two striahgt points on a kill by Siebers and the game-winner by Hummert.
