QUINCY -- The Friends of the Castle need volunteers to staff the Villa Kathrine and Quincy's tourist information center.

"This is a great opportunity to welcome the world to Quincy," said Paul Brown, vice president of the Friends.

The Villa Kathrine, at 532 Gardner Expressway, was built in 1900 with a design that resembles a Moorish castle. The Friends of the Castle rescued the historic building from demolition and restored it.

The Friends have operated the tourist information center with volunteer hosts since 1987. Duties include greeting visitors, answering questions, sharing information about the area, collecting admissions for tours and handling souvenir sales.

"It would help if we could recruit some volunteers as we go into spring and the volume of visitors increases," Brown said.

The Villa Kathrine served more than 5,400 individuals last year, including 4,300 visitors from all 50 states and 21 foreign countries. Dating back to 1987, the Villa has had 130,900 visitors.

A full orientation program will be provided for volunteers. Work schedules can be flexible.
