PITTSFIELD, Ill. -- A tractor-trailer rig flipped onto its side Tuesday when its brakes failed, the driver said.

The Pike County Sheriff's Department reports that Daniel Murphy, 32, of Winchester was driving a 2001 Sterling semi-truck west on Interstate 72. As Murphy attempted to stop at the intersection of County Highway 3, he said the brakes did not work. The truck's wheels caught the edge of a concrete median and flipped. The unit skidded about 88 feet before it came to rest.

Murphy was thought to have minor injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was air lifted to Memorial Hospital in Springfield by Survival Flight.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff's Department.

The Pittsfield Fire Department, Pike County EMS, Griggsville Fire Department, North Pike Fire Department and Illinois State Police also assisted at the scene.
